LED is short for Light Emitting Diode, a semi-conductor that emits light when electricity is applied to it. Unlike other light sources, LEDs are purely electronic which makes them more versatile, easier to control with technology and more durable.

Lightenco will always work with your location and conditions to choose the proper luminary for your application. Most LEDs can be placed in outdoor locations provided they are not directly exposed to water. They will often be rated for damp locations so can be recessed in soffits or in outdoor lighting fixtures. Some LEDs will be specifically rated for wet locations

There are many variables to consider including: the colour of the light (colour temperature), the quality of the light (Colour Rendering Index – CRI), whether or not it is dimmable, if it can be used in wet or damp locations, the light output (lumens), the wattage and voltage of the LED.

No. Unlike incandescent or fluorescent lighting technologies the lifetime of an LED is not affected by switching off/on.

LEDs should not flicker. If you have an LED that is flickering it is likely incompatible with the fixture in some way (voltage, transformer, equipment). Contact us at Lightenco and we’ll make sure you’re flicker-free!

Our branded lights go through the same testing and meet the same certifications as any other major brand on the market. Energy Star and Design Lights Consortium are just two measures of quality that our products meet. On the safety side our LEDs and fixtures always meet cUL or cETL standards.

LEDs work well to keep your environment cool in the summer months. Where Incandescent lamps lose 90% of their energy to heat-loss and CFLs lose about 33%, LEDs only lose about 10% of their energy as heat. However, be careful when touching an LED light near the base. This area (heat sink) can get quite warm at times, especially if operated all day as it’s necessary to draw heat away from the LEDs to the back of the lamp.

The typical range for operating temperature of LED lights is from -20°C to 50°C. Unlike CFLs, LEDs work very well in cold temperatures. However, hotter temperatures like saunas might not be appropriate for LEDs if you want to ensure their full lifetime.

LED are safer and healthier than many lighting products currently in use. LED lights do not contain mercury or lead and should always meet RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) standards.

Unlike incandescent or fluorescent light sources, LEDs generally do not emit IR (infrared) or UV (ultraviolet) spectrum, which means they are not harmful to your skin or health.

Most lighting technologies are produced in overseas factories, typically in China. While it’s desirable to manufacture LED lights locally, in many cases the individual parts would need to travel long distances reducing the environmental benefit. The longevity and energy efficiency of LEDs help to offset the carbon footprint associated with manufacturing..

While certain technologies (fluorescent tubes with magnetic ballasts) are shown to cause headaches, in many cases lighting design and layout are the root cause of headaches caused by light refraction or reflection.
